Oral submucous fibrosis ia a chronic disease in the oral cavity and includes the inflamation and progressive fibrosis of the submucosal tissue. It makes the mouth rigid and towards the end the patient would find it unable to open the mouth.
The initial symptom includes the burning sensation of the oral mucosa which is intensified by spicy food. Some of the other symptoms include excessive salvation, altered pigmentation, Vesiculation, recurrent stomatitis, defective gustatory sensation, dryness of the mouth and ulceration. The main aim of the treatment is to get relief from symptoms and to improve the mouth opening for the life time of the patient, which is more difficult by surgical methods.
For the excision of soft tissue lesions, diode lasers have been recently used. Contact diode lasers under local anesthesia has offered good results. The patient will be able to open his mouth at the end of about 2-3. Diode laser offers various advantages over surgical methods:
1. The procedure can be done under local anethesia .General anesthesia is not needed
2. No bleeding as laser is used
3. Less post-operative pain and swelling
4. Reduction in bacterial conduct
5. More predictable healing
6. Minimal scarring compared to the surgical methods
7. Biostimulation with laser helps in muscle relaxation, faster wound healing
