Digital dental impression

digital impression

An impression has a different meaning in life, but in dentistry, an impression is a negative form of teeth or other tissues of the oral cavity.

Digital impressions allow the dentists to create a virtual, computer-generated replica of the hard and soft tissues in the mouth using optical scanning devices. Digital technology captures clear and highly accurate impressions in a minute, without the need for traditional impression materials that some patients find inconvenient and messy.

The digital impression is recorded using an intraoral optical scanning device that uses visible blue or white light projecting from the tips of the scanner which is connected to an internal camera. The tip is moved over the surface of the teeth and gums and the recorded data is transferred to a computer. The recorded data is sent via e-mail to the laboratory and used to create restorations without the need for stone models.
